Things to Do in Rocky Point
The tide runs the day here, more than most visitors expect. Puerto Peñasco sits at the top of the Sea of Cortez, where the tidal range is among the most dramatic anywhere on Earth, and the water does not simply edge back a few feet. At Cholla Bay, on the north side of Black Mountain, a big swing can pull the sea out far enough to walk on ground that was under water at breakfast. That is where the tidepools come from.
Sandy Beach, on the south side of town, behaves differently and is where most of the resort strip sits. The Malecon at the old port is a third version of the town, and it is the one that comes alive after dark.
Plan around the tide chart and the day arranges itself. Ignore it and you spend a morning wondering where the ocean went.
